We examine total reflection for waves propagating from an isotropic medium to an anisotropic medium. By calculating the value, ni/neff (θt), the ratio of the indices of refraction of an isotropic medium and an anisotropic medium, it is found that total reflection can occur for waves propagating from a rarer medium to a denser medium. This is contrary to the usual total internal reflection which occurs only for waves transmitting from a denser medium to a rarer medium. We refer to this phenomenon as the abnormal total external reflection.
