Determination of the Fermi-level Subband Indices of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

The Fermi-level subband indices of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are determined by exploring, as an intermediate step, the positions of the graphene degeneracy points relative to the nanotube subbands. By these simple and general algebraic methods, the subband indices of SWCNTs are expressed explicitly by formulae and algorithms readily applicable to computations. Based on the Fermi-level subband indices, a complete classification scheme of SWCNTs is established: metal-1 and metal-2 nanotubes are both further classified into two types, and semiconductor nanotubes are classified into four types. This complete classification scheme is general and exhausts the types of WCNTs.
