Removal of Heavy Metal Contaminants by Lignocellulose

In recent years, the presence of toxic heavy metals in the environment has emerged as a major concern on a global scale. Heavy metals can be distinguished from other toxic pollutants, since they are not biodegradable and tend to be accumulated in living tissues, causing various diseases and disorders. Conventional methods for removing metals from industrial effluents such as chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, electrolysis, membrane separation, ion exchange, and adsorption are either too expensive or not suitable for large volume of low metal concentration wastewater. Therefore, a cost effective alternative technology or sorbent is needed. Lignocellulose that is available in large quantities is a cheap, rapidly renewable material. Additionally, because of its multiple functional groups, it has high potential as inexpensive sorbents. This paper reviewed the potential of the metal removal capabilities of different natural lignocellulose through chemical or biochemical modification.
