To investigate the effect of fish oil on, plasma lipoprotein and glucose levels, male Wistar rats fed lard or fish oil diet for 6 weeks were studied. Significantly decreased plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid levels were observed in rats fed fish oil. In addition, rats fed fish oil have lower plasma VLDL cholesterol ad LDL cholesterol levels when compared with those fed lard diet. Although significantly increased HDL cholesterol was observed in rats fed fish oil for 4 weeks, no significant difference in HDL cholesterol was found between the two dietary groups after 6 weeks of feeding study. It is interesting that fish oil significantly decreased plasma glucose level. In addition, rats fed a diet containing fish oil have an improved glucose tolerance ability. The observed influence of fish oil on plasma lipoprotein and glucose levels suggest that fish oil might play an important role in regulation of the metabolism of lipids and glucose in rats.
