Low or Moderate Intense Exercise Bout Increases the Resistance of LDL to Oxidation in Well-trained Exercisers

To investigate the effect of different intense exercise bout on the susceptibility of low density lipoprotein (LDL) to oxidation, 10 well-trained college students were recruited. 6 of them performed a randomized cross-over trial of low (35% VO2 max) and moderate (58% VO2 max) intense exercises, separated by 4 days, on a treadmill to expense 900 kcal. Venous blood was collected before, at 10 min, and 11 hr after the exercise. Low intense exercise significantly increased lag time for in vitro LDL oxidation at 10 min and 11 hr after exercise (69 & 65% increases, respectively). Moderate intense exercise also increased lag time at these two time points (30 & 27% increases, respectively) but significant difference was found only at 11 hr. The production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) of oxidized LDL was not changed by exercises. The rest 4 volunteers were served as non-exercise control. Blood was withdrawn after overnight fasting and 3 hours after meal, and no significant difference was found in lag time or TBARS of LDL. The results indicate that a single low intense exercise bout is enough to increase resistance of LDL to oxidation and the effect can be remained at least 11 hr after exercise.
