The purpose of this study was to examine our civilians' knowledge about Taiwan's forests nod their functions. Eight hundred nod fifty men or women were sampled by means of systematic and random sampling from the population of Taiwan and the Pescadores islands on July and August in 1990. It was found that 80% of the people recognized that using scientific methods to manage our forests is necessary nod 65% of the people recognized that, if necessary, timber cutting is stilt acceptable. It seems apparent that education level has significant impact on people's knowledge about forests and their function, but income level does not show the tame effect.
