The effect of moisture content and storage temperature on the germination of Machilus zuihoensis seeds was determined by storing the seeds in a closed desiccator containing saturated salt solution. The results showed seeds having lower moisture content resulting in lower viability. In terms of storage temperature, it was found that the seeds stored in desiccator at 33% relative humidity (R. H.) were able to maintain higher germination percentage at 5℃ than at 15℃; the seeds stored at 82% R. H. did not show consistent trend of temperature effect. Cold stratification provided the best storage for maintaining viability of the species. It was concluded that Machilus zuihoensis seeds are desiccation sensitive and appears to be recalcitrant seed type.
