Caustic Burns of the Esophagus: A Ten Year Analysis

並列摘要

1. Data on 26 patients with caustic burns of the esohpagus observed in the 802nd Army General Hospital over a period of 10 years (Jan. 1964 to Dec. 1973) are analyzed.2. 90% (24 cases) of the patients were adults. 70% of patients swallowed caustic liquids to commit suicide. The materials causing the injury were in order of strong acids (54%), caustic soda (23%).3. The results of esophageal bougienage in our series are poor. Perforation of the esophagus during instrumentation occurred in 6 patients (25%). Good results were obtained in only 5 cases (20%).4. To start esophageal dilatation, the ideal time is the tenth to twelfth day, but each patient should be treated individually.5. Esophageal substitution with right colon and cervical esophago-ileal anastomosis is a useful procedure for corrosive esophageal stricture. 71% (12 cases) of patients showed good results. There was no operative mortality.
