Antineoplstic Effect of High Dosage Vitamin C on C M Mouse Mammary Carcinoma

Using spontaneously-occurred, transplantable memmary carcinoma implanted into the subcutaneous region of the right hind leg of syngeneic inbred C3H mice, this experiment attempted to demonstrate the antineoplastic effect of high dosage vitamin C by gastric administration. A dose of 4gm/kg body weight of vitamin C solution was given twice per day for 12 consecutive days for the 3 groups of mice; (1) immediately before tumor implantation; (2) the day of tumor implantation, and (3) when the tumors were 10 mm in diameter. The control group of mice were implanted with the same carcinoma, but did not receive vitamin C treatment. The result indicated that vitamin C suppressed tumor growth slightly, and prolonged the host’s life minimally if vitamin C was administered before tumor implantation. The therapeutic effect was negligible, when vitamin C was given on the day of tumor implantation. There was practically no antineoplastic effect if vitamin C was administered when the tumor reached 10 mm in diameter. If there is no further stron evidence to support the antineoplastic effect of vitamin C from animal tumor models, it may be necessary to conduct a well-planned prospective study in human cancer systems before vitamin C can be accepted as an effective antineoplastic agent clinically.
