The Two Metabolic Thresholds during Incremental Exercise

Forty-seven normal young adults were studied by an incremental graded exercise test on a bicycle ergometer. Alterations in respiratory gas exchange were monitored by a computerized exercise system; minute ventilation (VE), oxygen consumption (VO2), CO2 production (VCO2), VE/VO2 and VE/VCO2 were plotted every 20 seconds. Two distinct ventilatory thresholds, the anaerobic threshold (AT) and threshold of decompensated metabolic acidosis (TDMA) were detected by two different methods. AT measured by VE/VO2 was similar to that measured by VE and/or VCO2 (correlation coefficient r=0.86). TDMA measured by VE/VCO2 was also very similar to that measured by VE and/or VCO2 (r=0.971). The ratio of AT to TDMA, as calculated by the above two methods, was 68.10% and 64.19% respectively. It was concluded that the AT and TDMA reported by Reinhard et al were similar to the two thresholds suggested by Skinner and McLellan.
