China has a long history in archive classifications and management. Years in the making, the Chinese Archive Classification (CAC) was a major undertaking in the field of Chinese archive and record management. The primary goal of the CAC was to establish a unified, standardized classification system for indexing of rich resources in Chinese archives, and for the eventual development of a national archival catalog. As an ideology-based system, its long-term impact is yet to be seen. The purposes of this article are to review the history and efforts in developing Chinese archive classifications, and examine the nature, organizational structures and functions of CAC in the information age.
