This article describes the definitions and developments of standards. It also reviews the characteristics and types of standards and presents a list of organizations that issue standards. In addition, guidelines are given for the development of a standard collection. Moreover, methods and tools to identify and acquire standards, especially via WWW, are explored along with resources to support standard information services.
