Restoration rate of mitochondrial ATPase activities of hepatocyte in extra-hepatic cholectatsis of experimental animal was studies. We showed that animals receiving common bile duct ligation (CBDL) for 4-days resulted in the elevation of all three types of mitochondrial ATPase activities (Na/K-ATPase, Ca-ATPase and Mg-ATPase) in hepatocytes (4.13±1.08, 3.72±0.95±, 3.65±0.86 units/mg protein, respectively). These enzyme activities were further increased to 10.87±1.45, 10.05±1.30, 9.04±1.90 units/mg protein when the ligation of bile duct was extended to a 9-day period. Furthermore, surgerical release of ligation was found to be incapable of restoring all these enzyme activities to the normal levels regardless the length of times of ligation. Fourteen days after releasing of ligation, we found that only serum bilirubin and Ca-ATPase restored to the normal levels. These data implicates that longer duration of bile duct ligation had a slow recovery rate of mitochondrial function. Taken together, we conclude that earlier decompression of bile duct may be a must for a better recovery from obstructive jaundice.
