A Cluster Infection of Ceftazidime-resistant Haemophilus parainfluenzae

At a regional hospital in southern Taiwan, three strains of ceftazidime-resistant Haemophilus parainfluenzae were isolated from three different patients between 9 May 2014 and 6 June 2014. Reconed as a rare phenomenon, an outbreak investigation was implemented. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was performed for genotyping of the bacterial strains. Results revealed these three strains were derived from different origins, indicating this was a cluster infection rather than an outbreak. Herein, it is still highly suggested that under an outbreak possibility, a molecular investigation should be implemented, especially encountering of different strains of the same species of antibiotic-resistant organisms isolated.
