Evaluation of a Basic Social Skills Training Program for Psychiatric Patients

A basic social skills training program for psychiatric patients was empirically developed and experimentally evaluated. Thirty subjects received at least eight sessions of this program. The Basic Social Skills Rating Scale was used as an assessment tool. The results showed that the subjects had marked improvements in the items of grooming, eye contact, posture, facial expression, listening, volume and tone, proper wording, socialization and impressions by others, but not in the items of thought and assertiveness. This study supports that the basic social skills training could benefit psychiatric patients. With regard to the maintenance of the acquired improvements, it might depend on that patients received enough positive reinforcement for their coping skills in the community.
