Effects of Task Complexity on Reaching Kinematics: A Pilot Study

Task complexity is an important factor to consider in activity analysis. This study aimed at investigating the effect of task complexity on reaching performance using kinematic analysis. Task complexity was varied by changing the number of motor steps. Using a repeated-measures counterbalanced design, six healthy adults performed a telephone task under three experimental conditions: A higher level of task complexity (picking up a telephone receiver and dialing a phone number), a moderate level of task complexity (picking up a receiver and bringing it to the ear to listen), and a lower level of task complexity (picking up a receiver). The reaching performance was measured by the OPTOTRAK motion analysis system. Results showed that the task with higher complexity elicited a slower, less direct reaching movement as compared with the tasks with moderate and lower complexity. These findings suggested that functional tasks with less complexity could influence movement efficiency and directness. Recommendations for future research were provided.
