宋代太湖平原農業生產問題的再檢討

Re-examination on the Problem of Agricultural Production in Lake T'ai Plain during the Sung Dynasty

摘要

本文是閱讀李伯重教授一篇論文後，由於意見不盡相同而作的討論。主要論點在於支持學界過去以太湖平原為宋代農業生產中心的看法，認為即使對此一地區農業生產狀況不宜估計過高，然而撇開「農業革命」的說法不談，此地的農業生產確應在宋代全國具有領先的地位，而非如李教授所主張只是一個虛像。本文指出這裡有較高的稻米畝產量，每畝3石的產量也許比較特殊，可是在2石到1石之間卻頗常見，而且在南宋末年，畝產2石的農地可以達到十之四五或更多。這裡的農民也在空間上和次數上力求充分地利用土地，種稻之外，又種其他作物。稻麥輪作的普遍程度雖然有待斟酌，但其存在應是事實，而且不僅見於高田，也見於低田。而所以能夠如此，和早熟稻應有密切關係，這裡的早熟稻品種不盡屬占城稻，卻也確實有些是屬於占城稻。稻米畝產量較高與稻麥輪作的存在，不僅由於這裡的土地比較肥沃，也由於農民採用了精耕稻作技術，而且隨著時間的推移而日益純熟，所謂粗放耕作之說實有待商榷。為了運用比較精細的技術，這裡的農民投入比其他地區農民更多的勞力在農事上，而成為地方官在其他地區勸農時所稱道的典範。

This article is a response to the viewpoint of Professor Bozhong Li on the agricultural production of Kiang-nan in the Sung dynasty. There are three problems discussed in the article: (1) the problem about per acre yield of rice, (2) the problem about Champa rice and the rotation of rice and wheat, (3) the problem about techniques of the intensive culture. The main point of the article is for the traditional view that the alluvial plain of Lake T’ai (included Su-chou, Hu-chou and Hsiu-chou) was the most advanced area of agriculture in all the country during the Sung dynasty. We agree at the opinion that the degree of the aricultural development in this area can not be over-evaluated. We do not like to use the term ”agricultural revolution” as some scholars to describe this development in the Sung dynasty. But we also do not approve Professor Li’s point that the advanced agricultural status of this area in the country was only an illusion.
