AN AR-BASED SEMI-AUTOMATED TEXTURE MAPPING APPROACH WITH PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND BIM FOR SUPPORTING CONSTRUCTION QUALITY INSPECTION

In recent years, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been widely applied to construction industries. However, a large portion of the current BIM applications concentrate on the design phase rather than the construction phase. It is due to the fact that the progress in the construction site cannot be completely and instantly reflected on BIM models. A BIM model reflects the ideal status of a building, but not the real status during the construction phase. In this paper, an Augmented Reality (AR)-based semi-automated texture mapping approach is proposed for supporting construction quality inspections. It combines photogrammetry and BIM technologies for segmenting images taken in construction sites. These images are then mapped onto corresponding surfaces of building elements in the BIM model based on rigorous projective geometry principle. The results illustrate that the proposed approach provides new potentials for BIM applications in construction phase, such as using walkthrough in Virtual Reality (VR) to assist on-site quality inspections, construction progress management, quantity takeoffs, etc.
