設計在後現代

Design in the Postmodern Condition

摘要


後現代與設計出現關聯,勉強可以從60年代算起,但是在歷經了四十年的時問之後,設計界裡對「後現代設計」一詞的認識與詮釋,隨著文化、科技、網路、經濟、與藝術等的變遷與發展,也有一些新的形式和方向。不過就像後現代論述的精神一樣,我們所認知的「後現代設計」其實也一直沒有一個絕對的定調,甚至更有趣的是,我們可以看見有些主張,矛盾卻又和諧地共處在同一件設計或設計理念裡。本研究分別從去主體、全球化與全球地方化、媒體文化、數位科技與網路以及物質消費社會五點後現代現象,討論如是現象對設計思維和設計表現的一些影響和結果。然而後現代現象中「眾聲喧嘩」的文化基本特徵,也從成了後現代設計交錯的多樣化、多元化現象,使設計一方面服膺於資本主義霸權的、消費的、媒體控制的集體意識;另一方面也同時尋求自由放任的符號力量、個人性、地方性的多元認同。這種矛盾展現了後現代思維中悅納異己的寬容度,不僅維持了當代社會活力,進而在設計中產生始料未及的意義擴散結果。

The connection discovered between postmodern and design can probably be traced back to the 1960s. However, after a period of four decades, how the design industry comprehends and defines 'postmodern design' has been in a new way and direction due to the changes and development of culture, technology, internet, economy and art etc. Like the spirit that postmodernism displays, in fact, there has never been an absolute definition of 'postmodern design' that we are cognizant of. Even more interestingly, we can see some assertions, which are contradictory but successfully combined together, in a design work or principle. This research examines the effects and consequences of postmodern condition, de-subjectification, globalization and global localization, media culture, digital technology and internet, and material consumption, on the thinking and presentations of design. Due to the basic characteristics of postmodern condition each having its own overpowering identity, this has helped create more varied and diverse forms mixed in postmodern design. As a result, postmodern design serves the collective consciousness of the supreme power, consumption and media-control of capitalism to design whilst also seeking for the symbolic power of unrestrained freedom and a sense of various personal and local identities. This contradiction represents the capability and flexibility of absorbing differences in postmodern thinking, therefore helping to maintain the energy of society and produce the unexpected results of spreading their meanings in design.
