Unfinishedness and Sketch Consciousness in Tsai Shui-Lin's Works

Tsai Shui-Lin (1932-2015) was a local artist and art teacher in Pingtung. This paper investigates the concept of unfinishedness and self-schema in his artworks. There are two parts in this article. The first is about the meaning in Tsai's last and unfinished work and how they convey the messages of return and conversion of his identity and family-ness. We also discuss and apply Jean-Luc Nancy's thinking of drawing and François Jullien's theory of sketch. The second part focuses on his identity as a teacher and what he taught about sketch and draft in his class and studio.
