This essay is an epistemological critique of current landscape research in Britain and the U.S. since 1970s, which classified into four theoretical typologies as following: visual aesthetics of landscape perception, humanistic landscape (or place), landscape history discourse and ideological analysis of landscape. The critique examines the problematic concerning the dual and united relationship between value and form, subject and object, individual and collective, and then uncovers the ideology of these discourses.
