The paper expects to contribute to the discussion of the symposium through a critical retrospect and prospect of the experience and lessons of Graduate Institute of Building and Planning, National Taiwan University. As a senior faculty and the director, the paper reviews our education purposes, major intellectual clues and the difficulties in implementation. Considering the education purposes and facing the reality of the limits of education resources, the core faculty has set the common goal of Master Program since the late years of 1970s as ”professional generalist”, or ”a kind of liberal education for professional”, or ”a generalist of specialist”, ”an all-round professional”, or ”the professional training with general knowledge”, which is the shared knowledge and skills among architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning. The students and the faculty responded the dynamics of the social change in Taiwan in good time, due to the style of open air of Taiwan University and the selected faculty of the returned students studying abroad. They do make impacts through the responses to a series of urban movements. After that, facing the current transformation of space and society, the students request for reform proposal and the faculty also propose a new direction to answer the students' expectation and to restructure the institute through new personnel, curriculum and research directions needed in the coming reform. Indeed, this is the challenge of Graduate Institute of Building and Planning, National Taiwan University in the global informational society.
