Objective: Mild psychiatric symptoms among high school students have been noted recently. After the university entrance examination, these students face another challenging environment. What is the mental health status of freshmen in a university? Materials and Methods: A structured questionnaire was used to study the students’ personality characteristics, perceptions of distress, self rated psychiatric symptoms and their correlates. Programs to improve student adjustment can then be considered. Results: A total of 825 valid questionnaires were collected. Men represented 58.9% of responders and the mean age was 18.5 years. Daily life distress of concerning future prospects, family and school adjustment was not uncommon. Overall 8.7%of freshman had psychiatric symptoms, One out of six had symptoms of depression, and one out of ten had neurotic or phobic symptoms. With the exception of phobia, male students were more likely to have psychiatric symptoms than female students. Differences were more found between colleges, in regard to neurotic and anxiety symptoms. The correlation between psychiatric symptoms and distress concerning future prospects was the highest. Psychiatric symptoms positively correlated with neurotic personality and negatively correlated with self-acceptance. Distress concerning future prospects was the most important factor predicting psychiatric symptoms. Conclusions: Freshmen who perceived distress were more likely to have psychiatric symptoms. Screening distress and psychiatric symptoms is suggested during admission to college. Counseling and care with a biopsychosocial model of those who are physically or mentally distressed are crucial.
