On account of exhaustion of fossil fuel sources and global warming, researches on electrochemical energy storage devices have grown exponentially over the past decades. Being at the forefront of energy storage devices, lithium ion batteries have been vastly used in portable electronics, hybrid electric and electric vehicles. Since the discovery of graphene, it has been widely coalesced to other materials for various applications to improve or reinforce their properties. In recent years, researchers have designed and experimented on ways how to incorporate graphene to battery systems. They have found out that graphene fundamentally improved the electrochemical performance of Lithium ion batteries due to its large specific area, high electrical conductivity and high flexibility and superior mechanical strength. In this review, we will introduce a brief introduction of graphene, lithium ion batteries, and the integration and applications of graphene for both cathode and anode electrodes of lithium ion batteries.
