Osteophytosis of the knee joint is divided into three types depending on patient history, symptoms, physical examination data, and X-ray features: (1) simple pain; (2) pain with swelling; (3) destructive chan2es in hone. Marked effects were achieved in treating 88 cases of osteophytosis of the knee joint topically by application of a plaster of various Chinese medicinals prescribed by the author. Rates of recovery and marked improvement were considerably higher than topically applied powders (p<0.05). The X-rays of some cases showed marked reduction in the osteophytosis and even its diappearance, and also a marked decrease in cystic changes in bone.
