UKIYOE is Japanese old-fashioned art of printed picture. One of them is ”The Great Waves” by Katushika Hokusai, which is one of the popular arts besides Mona Lisa. The Great Waves, which are just gripping men and small vessels, would hit the Westerner. The Great Waves seem to be abstractive, but at second glance they are quite real just like one moment of a motion picture.Hukusai dealt with various kind of Mt. Fuji, but a landscape is not the only subject of UKIYOE. There were many other subjects such as women, actors and sumo-wrestlers. You can see almost all the life styles of Edo people through UKIYOE. UKIYOE was produced a merchandise and sold to public. The production of UKIYOE was done by printing. By printing, you can make the same picture as many as you like. So this way is also suitable for making advertisements (bills).UKIYOE had been exported to the West since the opening of Japan (1954). UKIYOE had been collected by many artists of the West.
