VC-1視訊壓縮技術探討

The VC-1 Video Coding Technology

摘要


VC-1(Video Codec 1)是由電影電視工程師協會(Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers; SMPTE)所提出的視訊壓縮標凖,其技術基礎來自微軟公司的Windows Media Video® 9(WMV-9),VC-1標凖預計於2004年12月正式定案,屆時工研院光電所的FVD(Forward Versatile Disc)、DVD論壇的HD、DVD、以及藍光光碟協會的BD-ROM…等,都將採用VC-1做爲影片壓縮的格式。VC-1的壓縮效能與H.264旗鼓相當,但複雜度約只有H.264的50%,其最大特色是提供與影片編輯特效相呼應的編碼工具,並且針對高位元率的位元串流(bitstream)有特別的編碼符號表,使得VC-1在高解析度影片壓縮的應用上,尤其是對特效電影有很傑出的效能表現。本篇文章將簡介VC-1視訊壓縮技術的基本架構,除了讓讀者對VC-1有初步的認識外,也將比較其與MPEG-4、H.264之不同處。

Based on the core of Microsoft® Windows Media Video® 9 (WMV-9), the VC-1 (Video Codec 1) is proposed as a new video compression technology, which is currently under standardization by the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) and it will be finalized in Dec. 2004. The main futures of VC-1 are the new coding tools that provide good compression performance for the videos with rich special effects (e.g. fade in/out) and its low complexity that is easy for implementation. Some tests show that VC-1 requires 2 times less computation than H.264/AVC when decoding bitstreams with the same visual quality. Now, OES/ITRI FVD Association, the DVD Forum, and the Blu-ray Disc Association have adopted it as a mandatory video compression format for next-generation high-definition DVD formats. This paper includes a brief introduction to compression technologies used in VC-1. The comparison between VC-1, MPEG-4 Part-2, and H.264/AVC is also discussed in this paper.
