Wireless Sensor Networks Technology Program

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), an emerging technology comprising of sensing, computing, and internetworking, was nominated as one of the ten most potential technologies changing our world by MIT technology Review in 2003. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates the cost for deploying a wireless sensor networks will be as low as 10% of the cost for deploying a wired network. ”On World” predicts the total amount of deployed sensor nodes worldwide will be as many as 127 millions to 185 millions in year 2010. The WSN applications range from home applications to military applications. These applications include target detection, intrusion detection, weather monitoring, security protection, distributed computing, environment monitoring, factory automation, storage management, severe damage management, and so on. The U.S., Japan, and Korea governments are leading a global trend of digital ubiquitous networks. After establishing the M-Taiwan infrastructure, Taiwan also proposes the project of Ubiquitous Network Society (UNS). Based on the new trend, this project aims to develop and investigate the WSN technologies and expects to create novel applications and services on wireless sensor networks, and thereby create opportunities for high added-value services in Taiwan.
