Uterine carcinosarcoma, also known as malignant mixed mullerian tumors (MMMT), are rare but aggressive cancer of the uterus with a dismal prognosis. These tumors contain both malignant spithelial and sarcomatous(mesenchymal) elements. Patients present with symptoms similar to women with endometrial cancer, but stage for stage, outcomes are worse. The recommendation of treatment is to perform complete surgical staging similar to standard ovarian cancer, and followed by combinations of external beam radiation or vaginal brachytherapy and systematic chemotherapy in patients with both early and advanced stage disease. Paclitaxel and carboplatin combination chemotherapy as well as ifosfamide, along with whole pelvic irradiation, may lead to increased survival in patients with metastatic carcinosarcomas.
