For the evaluation of the effect of orthoptic training 171 cases treated at this Department is collected and analysed. There are 110 cases of esotropes and 61 cases of exotopes. One hundred and thirty eight cases are operated on while the remaing 33 cases are treated nonsurgically. In 95 cases orthoptic traing is given and in the remaining 76 cases no orthoptic traing is given. The period for follow up study ranges from 2 months to 6 years, the majority is 2-3 years. Cases gained grade Ⅱ fusion by major amblyoscope are classifed as functionally cured. The followings are the results.
1) The percentage of functional cure is much higher in the group of esotropes with the age at onset of more than 18 month-old than that with less than 18 months-old. But in exotropes both groups of age at onset of more than 18 month and less than 18 month behaved as nearly the same.
2) In esotrope the percentage of functional cure is much lower (15.2%) when no orthoptic training was added after operation as compared with the group for which orthoptic training was given postoperatively (83.0%). The same tendency was seen in exotropes 19.2%; 84.6%. From these results it becomes clear that orthoptic traing is useful even for postoperative cases.
3) Comparing two groups of esotrope with deviation angle below 10△ and so no operation indicated the group with orthoptic training gained l00% functional cure (14/14), while the other group without orthoptic training gained only 60% rate (6/10).
4) Follow up study of one year long reveals that the fusion grade and amplitude are much better and maintained well in cases with orthoptic traing of 6 months duration or longer both in esotrope and exotrope.
5) Majority of cases 19/34 gained grade Ⅱ fusion after orthoptic traing of 1 month duration (once or twice visit weekly), 8 cases were added after 2 months' traing, 3 cases 3 month later, 2 cases each after 4 months and 6 months respectively later. Only 3 cases gained stereopsis after training of 1 month and latest took 40 months long in 3 cases.
After completion of orthoptic training 34 cases gained fusion amplitade of 60△ Follow up study of one year after completion of training reveals that 25 cases maintain 50△, 3 cases 30△, 3 cases 20△, 2 cases l5△ and 1 case l0△ of fusion amplitade.
6) Intermittent strabismus, convergence excess and divergent excess type showed good response to orthoptic training.
