鳥胺酸與近視-近視之生化研究

Ornithine and Myopia: A Biochemical Study

Myopia has been one of the serious health problems here in Taiwan. The incidence of myopia has increased tremendously in the recent years. This condition has prompted us to do some more investigations. In 1973 Takki found elevated blood ornithine levels in patients with gyrate atrophy; ocular findings of these patients included myopia, opacities in the lens and vitreous changes, and the similarity between the fundus picture of gyrate atrophy and that of high myopic chorioretinal degeneration, we became curious and began this investigation. More than 900 individuals were subjects for this study. A group of 56 medical students and 59 foreigners residing in Taiwan served as a control. 544 persons of all ages having varying degrees of myopia were studied. The result revealed 150.7 μM and 150.6 μM in the control group compared to 213.5 μM in the myopia group. This difference is considered statistically significant, even though ornithine level in serum was found to be ten times as high as in gyrate atrophy. Citrulline was found to be low in the myopic group. The significance of this finding needs further investigation.
