Clinical Manifestations of Intermediate Uveitis

We analyze 22 patients with intermediate uveitis who had been seen consecutively at the uveitis clinic of the National Yang-Ming Medical College and Veterans General Hospital-Taipei during 4.5 years from June 1985 to November 1989. There were 7 males and 15 females. Thirteen (59%) of them had both eyes involved and 9(41%) one eye involved. The patients were grossly evenly distributed between 0 and 60 years of age, but the age of onset was mainly before 30 years. Blurred vision and redness were common presenting signs. Vitreous changes were cardinal findings. Vitreous cells were noted in 27(77%) eyes, snowball in 15(43%) and retrolental condensation in 7(20%). Snowbank was found in only 1(3%) eye. Anterior segment findings included keratic precipitates in 20(57%) eyes, posterior synechia in 17(49%), cataract in 9(26%) and ＞2+ cells in 8(23%). Fundal changes included cystoid macular edema in 15(43%) eyes, disc edema in 14(40%) and retinal exudate in 13(37%). After a follow-up of 34 months on average, visual acuity was of 6/12 or better in 66% of the eyes. No other particular associated medical findings were disclosed.
