In vitro susceptibility of M. chelonae to n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl blue) was tested by disk diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar. We found that this tissue glue is bacteriostatic to the bacterium and the size of inhibition zone is proportinal to the time glue droplet was on agar plate. Clinically, 9 male patients (mean age 31.7±4.1 years old) who suffered from culture-proven M. chelonae keratitis received n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate as an adjuctive medical therapy. During an average follow-up period of 4.3 months, 7 cases (77.8%) healed without major complication; with an averaged therapeutic course of 40.9±26.5 days, which was significantly shorter (p<0.05) than those who were treated with topical amikacin only (N=11, 60.4±28.3 days) It is postulated that n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, with short-term inhibition on the growth of M. chelonae by the action of peroxide, and a long term barrier effect on PMN-mediated ocular inflammation and or collagenase, promotes wound healing and can be considered as an adjunctive therapy for the keratitis.
