Purpose: The prevalence and risk factors of retinal disease in Taiwan is currently not documented in the literature. This study sought to determine the annual incidence of retinal disease and associated data in order to provide references for public health policy. Methods: The clinical database of the Bureau of National Health insurance between 1999-2003 were collected. In addition, the patients with various retinal diseases in five medical centers in Taiwan were also collected retrospectively. All of these data were analyzed to establish the databank of retinal diseases in Taiwan. Results: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) was the most common retinal disease in Taiwan with a total of 98210 patients between 1999 and 2003; retinal detachment (RD) was the second most common disease with a total of 34,040 patients during this period; age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) was the third most common disease with a total of 32,315 patients during this period. The average cost of the three diseases in each outpatient department were NT2,170,1,136,881, respectively; the total costs during this period were NT678,107,500, NT167,621,000 and NT315,488,000. In addition, the average cost of the three disease in each hospitalization were NT40,128, 42,819, 29,710; the total cost during this period were NT1,493,551,200, NT488,132,240 and NT1,203,140. The results of five hospitals also revealed that: age was found to be a significant risk factor in the development of retinal diseases. The incidence of retinal disease is also higher in patients with a history of diabetes and hypertension. Conclusion: The study provides the prevalence and risk factors of retinal disease in Taiwan. It also suggests that intensive control and education concerning about retinal disease may result in a beneficial decrease and cost-saving effect.
