A Study on Ontology-aware Digital Content Rights Management

The purpose of this study is to implement “Digital Rights Management (DRM)” as a module of a SCORM-compliant “Content Repository Management System” (CRMS). Based on promoting the continuous willingness of content providers to deliver their digital content on the networks, reward is an essential factor. Currently, the protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in CRMS is critically ignored while it adopts user accounts for access control at system level. Therefore, we propose a .Right Expression Language (REL) for making IPR protection of course materials more practical and flexible. In terms of the expression of user rights, Role-based Access Control model is applied to create user group and permission constraints of learning objects such as SCO, content package. Meanwhile, a RDF/RDFS as metadata language is designed for expressing REL data while it offers an ontology-driven semantic language for complicated information presentation and makes DRM practical and extensible. Two major results of this study are: (a). DRM provides content providers of CRMS an explicit IP protection and usage; (b). an author/reader will be prevented from breaking IPR law while he/she edits or downloads course materials in CRMS. Finally, the implications for the future study are also included.
