A virus isolated from garden lettuce plants, Lactuca scariola var. sativa, showing mild mosaic and chlorosis was designated lettuce mild mosaic virus (LMMV). The virus was tranmissible by sap inoculation and aphid (Myzus persicae Sulz.). Among mechanically inoculated plants of 21 species which belong to 7 families, the virus infected garden lettuce, Chenopodium amaranticolo, and C. quinoa systemically; and infected Gomphrena globosa locally. Virus particles were spherical with diameters of 28-30 nm. Triangular or quadrilaterial shaped crystals consisting mainly virus-like particles, existed in the infected cells of C. quinoa, but not in lettuce. This is a note of a new lettuce disease in Taiwan.
