The application of Material Inventory Measurement Using Close-Range Photogrammetry and Terrestrial 3D Laser Scannering

The conventional electronic total station measurement method for stockpile inventory has the drawbacks of long external operation time, high risk to personnel in field operation, and poor accuracy. Recently, the photogrammetry and the terrestrial 3D laser scannering technique has matured. If these techniques are used for stockpile volume measurement, the high-density and high-accuracy three-dimensional spatial information can be acquired so that the measurement efficiency and accuracy can be improved. In this study, three different types of measurement methods were used for performing the field measurement of the stockpile of the raw materials in the Hualien plant of Asia Cement Corporation. The volume of the stockpile was then calculated by the construction of a numerical terrain model so as to explore the possibility of replacing the conventional method and its practicability. In the experiment, the result of three-dimensional laser scanning is used as the correct value for comparison with other measurement results. The volume obtained by photogrammetry has an inaccuracy of 11.1% while the volume obtained by the conventional measurement method has an inaccuracy of 16%. However, the stockpile measurement by photogrammetry may encounter some practical difficulties for some other types of stockpiles, e.g., insufficient distance for the photograph, or excessive height of the stockpile. In general, each measurement method has its own strength for stockpile measurement. Before performing stockpile measurement, it is necessary to evaluate the condition for each case so as to determine the best measurement method with the highest cost effectiveness.
