清領時期臺灣石油的開發與利用（1861-1891）

1861年邱苟占地於今日苗栗出磺坑地區，提供給他人承租開採，成為臺灣石油開採史的記載源頭。另外在臺灣石油的進口中，最早為李春生於1865年進口並經銷石油而開始，在此期間臺灣的石油用途主要作為照明使用，別稱如煤油、礦油、火油、地油等，最初臺灣的石油進口國為美國，然而隨著俄國也大量開採出石油後臺灣的進口石油來源便成為以美國與俄國為大宗，並持續延伸到日治時期。清代臺灣石油的開採至始至終無法進行大規模開採，石油開採方式也多以人力採集自然溢出的石油原油，雖然有機械鑽探石油井嘗試，聘請簡時與絡克來到臺灣協助石油井的鑽探，但是隨著自然災害以及瘟疫發生的關係，造成相關的石油鑽探開採無法繼續，此外後續又因為遇到相關的自然災害，造成石油鑽井設施的損失。
