The main purpose of this study was to develop a short-term death education program and to study its effects on the nursing school students' attitudes toward death. Sample of this study consisted of 107 senior nursing students in Huang Kuang Junior College of Nursing and Medical Technology in Tai-chung. Coordinating with experiments on practical teching environment, quasi-experimental design was applied. The data was analyzed by one way analysis of variance to test the hypotheses concerning the effects of different teaching methods and the influences of death education on the nursing school students' attitudes toward death. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. The death education program significantly reduced the nursing students' fears of death, and the effect might remain following the four weeks of the courses. 2. Two different teaching methods got the same results in reducing fears of death. 3. Two important factors helping the students to reduce fears toward death were (1) exploring effective responses when a person faces death and (2) sharing and discussing the feelings in a supportive group when a person was facing death. 4. Death education inspired the students to think about their own deaths and those of their significant others. Death education also helped the students to understand better the meaning of life and to rearrange their life plans.
