The purpose of this study was to investigate nurses’ knowledge, attitude and behavioral intention about caring for AIDS patients and the correlation among the independent variables. Knowledge, attitude and behavioral scales were used as the investigating tool. This study revealed the following findings: There was only limited knowledge of AIDS among nurses. Nurses’ attitude and behavioral intentions tended to be positive. According to one-way ANOVA analysis, there was a higher level of knowledge, more positive attitude and behavioral intention in those who had received training and had experience in caring for AIDS patients. But multiple regression revealed that there were variables influencing nurses’ knowledge, attitude and behavioral intention. The variables that impacted on the levels of knowledge were in-service training, caring experience of AIDS and age. The variables that impacted on the attitude of nursing personnel were caring experience of AIDS, in-service training and position. The variables that impacted on nursing personnel’s behavioral tendencies were position, category of ward and caring experience of AIDS. The level of knowledge about HIV infection in nursing personnel was positively correlated to attitude and behavioral tendency. The results could be a reference for the Department of Health (DOH) or other national health administrative organizations and hospitals establishing standard guideline and promote nurses’ in service education about AIDS.
