Although early concepts of meta-analysis date back to the 1930s, appropriate statistical methods were not available until the late 1970s to facilitate more valid analyses of results across studies. The term “meta-analysis” was coined in 1976 by Glass. It goes beyond the traditional literature review by using statistical methods to systematically combine results across studies in a specific research question. Compared to the traditional narrative review of the literature, meta-analysis has some advantages. The foundation of science is the accumulation of knowledge from the results of many studies. Meta-analysis provides a legitimate method for alternative scientific research. This article presents the steps of conducting a meta-analysis and provids guidelines for researchers who are interested in this method. The advantages and limitations of the meta-analysis are discussed. Implications of meta-analysis in nursing practice and research are proposed. Using meta-analysis to enhance the body of knowledge, provide guidelines for nursing practice and research, and influence health policy are important ways that nurse researchers can contribute to improving clients’ health outcomes and quality of care.
