There are two main reasons for the lower sulfur conversion than expected in the desulfurization plant. One is the channeling phenomenon in the reactor bed, the other one is the deactivation of catalyst. The Refining & Manufacturing Research Center developed an on-line He inspection method to find the flow pattern for the fixed reactor bed. The present paper presented a case study example for the flow pattern measurement of reactor bed. It included measured method, data analysis. The contact efficiency was used to represent the flow pattern. The higher contact efficiency mean the flow pattern is more like plug flow in the reactor. The lower contact efficiency means bad flow pattern in the reactor. The contact efficiency for the sock loading plant has lower the value than the plant with dense loading. The plant with dense loading also has higher sulfur removal conversion.
