It has been six years since the monitoring network for crustal motion was established in Shou-Feng, Hualien. It is composed of six baselines whose lengths are measured by EDM at regular interval of every two days. The results of observation have revealed the remarkable crustal motions in this area which occur before earthquakes. The frequency of the earthquake in the period of 1994-1996 was extremely high including three shallow earthquakes of the magnitude 5.7-5.8. About two months before these each earthquake, the baselines in the coastal mountains of this network shortened in rather short period and the corresponding strain increased by 1.5-2 PPM. According to the curve fitting to the diagram for this variation, the accelerations of the variation were rapid. These changes in baseline length can be good indicator of earthquakes and the study on the relationship between this phenomena and earthquake will increase our understanding on the earthquake itself. I hope it will contribute to the earthquake prediction.
