This paper presents the possible failure patterns for deep excavation in Taipei Basin in view of geological characteristics. On the basis of previous studies, bottom heave is the main failure pattern commonly seen in Keelung river area, which is dominated by the mechanism of shearing due to soil's limited strength under unloading. Wall leakage or/and piping are main patterns occasionally occurred in Tamshui river and Hsintien river areas, which are dominated by the mechanism of groundwater seepage. With the basic understanding on failure patterns and corresponding mechanisms, an animation example is shown to illustrate the failure process of Chengchou Road failure occurred not too long ago. Conclusion indicates that engineers must pay attention to the rule of experience according to previous cases.
