The Early Republic newspapers are materials replete with valuable literature for historical study, since they may serve as useful resources for understanding the backgrounds of politics, society, economy, and lifestyle of the Early Republic. However, the Early Republic historical newspapers are usually large in page size and fragile in paper quality, which causes difficulties both in preservation and in information retrieval. To overcome the difficulties, digitization is a significant medium to refresh the values of historical newspapers. This paper takes as an example the digitization project of Peiping's ”Shih Chieh Jih Pao” processed by Shih-Hsin University. Through an analysis of the quality of original physical materials, definition and formulation of metadata, and display modes of search results, this study attempts to reveal the different conditions of digitization between historical newspapers and modem newspapers. This paper also offers suggestions about potential issues and problems of the digitization of historical newspapers.
