Isolated Rectal Perforation Secondary to an Open Book Fracture : A Case Report

Pelvic fractures are frequently accompanied by significant hemorrhage and lower urinary tract injuries, but associated rectal perforation is very rare, especially in blunt trauma. We report an unusual case of isolated rectal perforation in an initially hemodynamically stable patient with an open book fracture. Failure to make the diagnosis early led to a fatal outcome. The appropriate initial standard patient evaluation and the mechanism of injury are discussed.
