In post-war Taiwan, the research field of "Western military history" presents itself in a peculiar way, seemingly to be paid little attention to and being a hot topic at the same time. If we say it is being paid little attention to, it is because only few professional historians carry out relevant studies on this subject. If we say it is a hot topic, it is because there is no lack of relevant books and translated works published outside professional circles. There are also specialized military periodicals that are available for reference and for reading. Focusing on research results from historians and from M.A. and Ph.D. theses, this article reviews and examines the research in Taiwan in Western military history. Apart from quantitative analysis and qualitative research, which serve to provide a general over view, this article also attempts to produce an appropriate assessment. On the basis of the conclusions drawn from this, it furthermore explores what difficulties Taiwanese historians may face when they carry out studies in Western military history. The article then points out specific ways of solving these difficulties and makes suggestions for the course to be taken in the further development of such historical research.
