Newspaper and magazines, one kind of newly emerging things, played a significant role in the late 19th century China. After the First Sino-Japanese War, new magazines were founded successively. When the Reform Movement came along, reformers focused on the operation and management of newspapers, described their political views actively, and successfully expanded their influences. Why are newspaper and magazines so attractive to the gentry in late Qing Dynasty? Are there any answers besides the reformers' proposition that pointed out defects of the current politics. This article focus on Guowen-bao(國聞報) and zhi-bao(直報), two kinds of important newspapers in Tianjin(天津) during the late 19th century, analyze the information concerning the reform of imperial examination system in these two newspapers, point out the information in the newspapers which could implicate the gentry class future prospects, and then create a more acceptable social atmosphere for the gentry to face the reform.
