Hazards of Chromium Electroplating Manufacturing

The main purpose of electroplating manufacturing is to coat specific kinds of metals in order to protect from erosion, friction or breaking. Efficiency of Efficiency of electroplating is maintained by several pretreatment processes which includes adding surfactants to increase conductivity. Chromium is one of the most hazardous materials used in the electroplating process. Numerous studies have been conducted in Taiwan investigating the relationship between exposure to chromium and the workers´ health status. A high prevalence of disorders including nasal septum and dermal, lung, and kidney functions has been found. A high frequency of sister-chromated exchanges have also been discovered. These abnormalities represent a hazardous working environment for chromium electroplating workers. Several measures need to be adopted in order to decrease airborne chromium concentrations, including: installation of local ventilation systems, covering the electroplating tank and adding anti-foaming agents to prevent release of chromic acids, and to replace certain manual operations with semi-automation. Adoption of these measures and periodic governmental oversight are necessary steps toward creating a safe working environment for chromium electroplating workers.
