Entery of gas into brain circulation (Cerebral arterial gas embolism) is an urgent condition that requires immediate treatment. Iatrogenic origin and rapid ascend during a dive are the most common causes. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy with mono- or multi-place chamber is the primary treatment, and any delayed or inappropriate management of the disease can result in major neurological morbidity or death. An understanding of the pathophysiology and principies of treatment are therefore essential for all first line physicians. In this article, we will review and discuss cerebral arterial gas embolism with respect to its causes, mechanisms, pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
